4 easy ways to keep your purse organized and clutter free

Is yourĀ purse is a magnet for clutter?

Since it’s your lifeline away from home, you probably end up stuffing a lot of things in it when you’re out of the house. I try to keep only the necessities in my purse, but as a mom, that’s still a lot of stuff!

4 easy ways to keep your purse organized and clutter free. Make your life easier with these simple steps so you can always find what you need. Especially organization idea #1 makes being out with your family a whole lot easier. With lot of helpful pics.

4Ā easy waysĀ toĀ keep yourĀ purse organized.

1. Give your purse a designated place.

We have a huge row of hooks in our laundry room / mud room. If I’m at home, my rule is that my purse is on that hook. I would surely lose my purse if I didn’t put it onĀ that hook every day.

Sometimes I’m tempted to leave it on the counter if I walk in the house with my arms full of things. But I try to remember this oneĀ trick that keepsĀ the house cleaner and hang it up right away.Ā Busy moms need helpful habits!

2. Keep everything inside a zipper pouch.

I have 3 different zipper pouches that stay in my purse. Each bag is a different color so it’s easy to grab the right bag when I’m looking for something.

  • makeup pouch
  • essential oils pouch
  • first aid / toiletries pouch (bandaids, nail scissors, tissues, dental floss, Epipen)

When you compartmentalize like this, it’s easy to find what you need without having to dig around in a big mess.

Other ideas for pouches would be:
kids mini busy bag (lots of busy bag ideas here)
technology (headphones, charger)
shopping extras (loyalty cards, receipts, coupons, checkbook, pen)
snacks (here is a list of snacks for when you’re on-the-go)
hair care and accessories

Drivers license, registration and insurance are clipped together for quick retrieval.

3. A roomy wallet is helpful forĀ all the importantĀ papers and cards.

My wallet has yet more compartments for credit and debit cards, cash, library cards, etc. I keep my drivers license clipped to my license and registration. I dread ever getting pulled over, but if it should happen, it’s easy to find the right papers.

4. With all these different compartments, almost nothing is left loose in my purse.

My keys (newly decluttered!) and phone are loose and not surprisingly, those are the two things I’m usually digging around for. I guess I need a better system for them!

Benefits of a compartmentalized purse

The benefits of organizing your purse this way are many.

  • Finding what you need is easy.
  • You can easily switch out purses just by grabbing your bags and putting them into the new purse. Everything is ready to go in seconds.
  • It’s easy to tidy out one section at a time by taking the whole pouchĀ out.
  • The bags are just so darn cute! I found mine at Staples, but Target sometimes carries them in the Dollar Section. You can find all kinds of funĀ options at Amazon (affiliate link)

Now that your purse is organized, you’ve got to maintain that organization.

Every week or so, go through your pockets and pouches and clean out the junk. Get rid of:

    • outdated receipts (Unless I might need to return something or it’s a large purchase, I toss receipts immediately. Here’s an easy way to track your purchases)
    • gum wrappers
    • stray scraps of paper
    • expired or melted cosmetics
    • crumbs
    • the 179 things your kids gave you to ā€œhold on toā€ and then promptly forgot about

Replenish tissues, snacks, scrap paper, Bandaids, empty essential oil bottles, and such.

Cleaning out and organizing your purse helps you stay on top of your job as mom and be prepared for whatever life sends your way.

  1. I have found that the number 1 thing for me keeping my purse organized is the maintenance. Except I try and take the “extra” out as soon as I get home (since I’m already pulling my phone and planner out, might as well grab the receipt, etc).

  2. Wow, Sarah, I really needed this post! Thank you so much for the idea of the pouches. I think that those could really help me with my purse (which is usually a disaster!) I may try using a pouch for coupons, too. Do you have any other tips for keeping coupons organized? Thanks again for this super-practical post!

  3. Hi, this is a great post, it’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. It’s annoying that the inside of most bags are black, it really is a black hole lol one thing I do is clip my keys to the inside of my bag by attaching one of those clipable things to my key ring. Also I can’t have a bag that doesn’t have a pocket for my mobile.

    • I just was saying I need a new purse and I am going to try and find one that doesn’t have a black inside because I can’t find anything. It really is like a black hole lol

  4. I LOVE those neon bags! Unfortunately, I cannot find them on the Staples website. šŸ™
Is there a brand or label on them?

    • I bought cute bags from the Dollar Tree, I think they are suppose to be for school supplies but I put makeup, my keys, medicine etc. in 3 different colored bags. They come in a pretty pink, purple, blue and other colors. Hey for a buck if they get dirty just toss it and buy another one.

  5. I just bought a new purse big enough to carry all the things I need to have with me, my glucose monitor and tablets, planner, sunglasses, snacks, and so on. You just made me realize I need a pouch for the small things I don’t have a space for but need. Thanks
