Is Butcher Box worth it in 2020? (and how you can get my meal planning system for free)

Got any kids who LOVE their burgers?
… or juicy steaks?
… or mouth-watering pork chops?
… or protein in general? (My teenage athletes keep saying “More protein Mom!”)

Psst – make sure you read to the end of this post to find out how you can get a free meal planning BONUS from me when you order a Butcher Box)

Affiliate links are present and I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you if you purchase a Butcher Box.

As a single mom, I freak out a little about all this meat because:

  1. Who wants to spend ALL that time shopping and cooking? According to my 4 boys, there’s never enough to eat in the house LOL
  2. I don’t have a bottomless grocery budget when it comes to fueling their desire for meat

We tried (and loved!) Butcher Box a couple years ago but I was in the middle of my divorce and cooking wasn’t such a priority back then so I let my subscription lapse.

Now that that’s all behind us and I realized they had so many more options PLUS an all new completely recyclable shipping carton, I knew we had to try it again.

What is Butcher Box?

Butcher Box is a subscription service that sends high quality grass-fed beef, free range organic chicken, heritage breed pork and sustainably sourced wild caught Alaskan and sockeye salmon directly to your door. They’re just like your neighborhood butcher with the added twist of delivery!

I love the story of how they began.

Apparently premium grass fed beef is hard to come by in some areas of the country. And that’s why their founder, Mike Salguero, found himself picking up a share of grass fed beef from someone’s living room. Definitely NOT your typical grocery shopping experience! Mike was instantly hooked on the delicious taste of grass fed, and was thrilled to discover the health advantages of grass-fed beef.

He wondered why it was so hard to find this delicious, quality meat.

Mike learned that not everyone has access to grass-fed beef, or their exposure is limited to products like ground beef. Currently, only 1% of the total beef consumed in the United States is 100% grass-fed.

And that’s why Butcher Box was born.

Their goal is to make grass-fed beef (and now, heritage breed pork and organic chicken) more accessible than ever before.

What’s the big deal about grass fed beef?

According to the Mayo Clinic, grass fed beef may have the following benefits:

  • Less total fat
  • More heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids
  • More conjugated linoleic acid, a type of fat that’s thought to reduce heart disease and cancer risks
  • More antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin E

Now I get why grass fed beef is so important.

Why I’m obsessed with Butcher Box

Ask me to cook simple family favorites like chili, burgers, roast chicken?

No problem!

But I’ll admit when it comes to selecting different cuts of meat, you’ll find me staring at the meat display and googling “how to cook steak tips” or “NY strip vs rib eye.” And then I usually chicken out and just get the ground beef.

That’s where Butcher Box has saved the day!

They’ve already picked out the most delicious cuts of meat AND they’ve got a library of recipes that I can handle!

And not 4 million recipes like you’d get if you search Pinterest. Nope – when I was planning to prepare the pork tenderloin for dinner, I pulled up the Butcher Box website, picked the recipe I liked best and I was all set. No scrolling through way too many recipes and getting stuck in analysis paralysis. I appreciate how they have recommended cooking methods alongside the recipes as well.

Butcher Box Pork Chops

So basically Butcher Box lets me serve MORE variety without stressing about which cuts of meat will taste best or what recipes to use.

They do all that legwork for me.

Everything we’ve tried so far has been delicious!

This month, we’ve had:

  • Breakfast sausage (soooo good! This was the perfect addition to Mother’s Day breakfast)
  • Pork chops
  • Pork tenderloin
  • Ground beef
  • Steak tips

The dry ice is a fun diversion, too!

3 reasons you should try Butcher Box

1. You’ll save hours planning and shopping

Have you ever had groceries show up at your house?

Best. Day. Ever.

I seriously adore it when I can spend 5 or 10 minutes placing an order online and have a box show up at my door. And now I have all the meat I need for a good 8-10 meals. I add in a few extra rounds of tacos, burgers, or whatever else sounds yummy and I’ve got the meals planned for the month.

2. You know you’re getting quality with every box.

I already said this but Butcher Box has such high quality meat. Depending on where you live, you may not even be able to find these things in your local store.

3. Value: Decide if you want to prioritize quality or quantity.

You can fill your box with higher priced meats and know that you’re getting the best quality OR you can choose more value-based options. Either way, you can use Butcher Box to get an incredible value. More on exactly how to get the most bang for your buck in a minute.

What makes Butcher Box different?

Quality, convenience, and value for starters.

But beyond that, I love that this part of my grocery shopping is now squared away.

No decision making (beyond a few minutes each month on their site to see what looks good). It feels so much easier to pick out most of our meat for the month. And I find that I’m much more willing to try out a new recipe when I know it’s been vetted by the Butcher Box chef. I don’t have any patience for a lot of trial and error on a busy weeknight.

Another thing I adore about this company is their commitment to sustainability, humane farming, fair labor practices, and more.

Fully Recyclable Packaging!

The very first Butcher Box I received had a standard styrofoam cooler and dry ice to keep the meat frozen. While I understood that this was a standard practice when shipping frozen food, I didn’t love the fact that I now had a styrofoam cooler to dispose of. They later graduated to an insulated tote which was a nice switch, but eventually you’re not going to need another one of those, amiright? (#clutter!)

Now the Butcher Box team has engineered a fully recyclable shipping package. No more styrofoam! And much less waste.

How to get the most value out of Butcher Box?

1: Decide if you’re going to order budget items or if your Box will be reserved for higher end cuts of meat (or if you want both).

2: Choose the Custom Box and pick either the 24 or 48 meal option.

3: Start filling your box.

These cuts are a lower price per pound (great for weeknight dinners):

  • All the chicken options
  • Ground pork
  • Pork chops (my favorite!)
  • Pork butt (with or without the bone)
  • Chuck roast

These cuts are a higher price per pound (and perfect for those extra special meals):

  • Any of the steaks (so good!)
  • Breakfast sausage (scrumptious!)
  • Bacon
  • Chicken tenders

Shipping is always free too!
